Democracy for Sale – FREE Film Screening

September 26, 2017 @ 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm

Free

Democracy for Sale is a powerful new documentary that reveals what happens when big-money political interests impact our right to a fair, equitable voting system. The one-hour movie highlights the destructive effect of Virginia’s redistricting system, which promotes gerrymandering, decreased voter turnout, and potential cuts to education and environmental concerns. The film delivers a real-life case study that parallels Virginia’s current voter situation. Starring Zach Galifianakis, the film demonstrates what happens when cozy relationships are nurtured between regulators and industry, and politicians that care more about serving their donors than their constituents. In addition to gaining important insights, audience members will learn how to get involved in demanding reform. The screening will be followed by a Q&A and discussion with area experts.

The showing is presented by the League of Women Voters of Roanoke Valley* and the Virginia Civic Engagement Table in partnership with Working Films.

* The League of Women Voters of Roanoke Valley was granted Member-At-Large status in April, 2017. The League is proud to be nonpartisan, neither supporting nor opposing candidates or political parties at any level of government, but always working on vital issues of concern to members and the public.
